Designation Of Origin Valdeorras

In 1945 the Designation of Origin Valdeorras was recognized. This entity was born with the aim of retrieving indigenous varieties, mainly Godello and Mencía, as well as promoting the recognition, the expansion and the marketing of the wines of the area.

The wine tradition of Valdeorras dates back to the Romans era, who set up in the area to exploit the abundant gold resources from the ore deposits that there were there, and they planted vast extensions of vineyards.

Throughout the centuries, this historical fact has been considered as the origin of one of the wine producing zones most charismatic and with better reputation of Spain, and it also is considered the first place of Galicia where wine started to be produced.

This Designation covers the municipalities of A Rúa, O Barco, Petín, O Bolo, Rubiá, Vilamartín, Carballeda de Valdeorras and Larouco. In these productions areas the climate is dryer than in the rest of Galicia, with very hot summers, ideal for the ripening of the grape.

The soils are variated: there are slaty and granitic surfaces, and also sedimentary surfaces where there are abundant boulders. In this diversity of soils proliferate mainly mono-varietal wines of Godello and Mencía grape, but there also are other authorized lineages by de DO. Regarding the white wine: Dona Branca and Palomino or Jerez. Regarding the red wine: Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao or María Ardoña, Negreda, Garnacha, Tintorera, Alicante, Tempranillo and Grao Negro.

Today, the responsibility to elaborate quality wines inside de Designation of Origin falls on the wineries registered in the Regulatory Board, like Terriña, which work to maintain and guarantee the origin and the quality of these wines which are the maximum expression of the soil where they grow.
